The Calile Hotel, Brisbane
The Calile opened in 2018 as Australia's first true urban resort, drawing inspiration from hot-weather resort cities like Miami, Palm Springs, Rio de Janeiro and Mexico City. Curved arches, breezeblocks and 175 rooms wrapped around a central pool give it that "tropical modernism" feel that's rare this close to the city - equal parts outdoor amphitheatre and elegant indoor grand room.
It's been named the top hotel in Oceania two years running in the World's 50 Best Hotels awards, praised for that laid-back, sun-soaked style it's become known for. It's unlike anything else in Brisbane - city-fringe, but it feels a world away.
